About this blog

"Man plays only when he is in the full sense of the word a man, and he is only wholly Man when he is playing.  (...) we find ourselves at the same time in the condition of utter rest and extreme movement and the result is that wonderful emotion for which reason has no conception and language no name."
Friedrich Schiller "On the aesthetic education of man", Fifteenth Letter (1795)

1960s free jazz tends to be perceived in terms of a core curriculum of several recordings. The intention here is to look instead at some other recordings perhaps less programmatic and more informal, the understated collective works in 60s free jazz and beyond.
